Spring Mower Tune-Up Checklist: Get Ready for the Season
When the grass starts growing, the last thing you want is a mower that won’t start — or a long wait at the shop because you called the same week as everyone else. A little spring prep goes a long way. Here’s the checklist we run through on zero-turns and riding mowers.
1. Change the oil & filter
If you didn’t change it in the fall, do it now. Fresh oil and a new filter are the cheapest insurance for your engine.
2. Replace the air filter (and check the fuel filter)
A clogged air filter robs power and fuel economy. Swap it, and replace the fuel filter if it’s due.
3. Sharpen or replace the blades
Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it, which stresses your lawn and your machine. Sharp, balanced blades give a cleaner cut and a healthier lawn.
4. Check the spark plug
A fresh plug means easier starts and smoother running. Gap or replace as needed.
5. Test the battery
Batteries fade over winter. Charge it up and check the terminals for corrosion.
6. Set the tire pressure
Uneven tire pressure causes an uneven cut. Set all tires to spec.
7. Clean the deck & grease the fittings
Scrape out caked grass, check for damage, and hit the grease fittings so everything turns freely.
8. Start with fresh fuel
Old fuel gums up carburetors. Begin the season with fresh gas — and use a stabilizer if the mower will sit between mows.
